This week’s raucous talk at Redwing was a riot, but not like that in Vancouver over the Canuck’s Stanley Cup loss, which we did touch on. And, it was a welcome home show as one of our favorite Military men was in attendance after just returning from a long deployment (thank you for your service, Sir.) We laughed, drank and chatted our way through hot topics & happening including new furniture purchases, Cox Communications, the flag football championship, a graduating design pup, politics, Weiners and straight men taking on lesbian personas (Gay Girl in Damascus & LezGetReal.) And, that was just the first half. Remember, knowledge is power. Help Lead The Way by getting tested for HIV – it really is no longer optional. Read More
This week’s LIVE in-studio guests are San Diego VIPs in a big way. On numerous shows, both Aaron & Ophelia have stressed the importance of being tested for HIV, so we were happy to welcome several of the personalities behind the newly launched Lead The Way campaign, Isabel Cruz owner of Barrio Star, Kinsee Morlan reporter for San Diego CityBeat and Dr. Susan Little from UCSD. Lead The Way is a first of its kind study orchestrated by UC San Diego’s School of Medicine that aims to get everyone in 92103 + 92104 to answer the question “Would you or wouldn’t you take an HIV test?” If you would, LTW offers a free, confidential HIV Rapid Test that gives you your results in 10 minutes. If you would not, they’d like you to fill out a short, confidential survey. By participating in this study, you are helping them better overcome barriers to HIV testing. If Lead The Way can get everyone to test, they can get treatment to everyone who wants it. And, effective treatment can reduce the chances of HIV transmission by up to 90%. Dr. Little explained why, after 30 years of AIDS with still no vaccine, studies like Lead The Way are so vital in helping to prevent further spread of the disease. Kinsee, Isabel & our own Aaron then shared why they said “yes” to being part of the study’s promotional campaign, leaders in the community helping to “Lead The Way.” People, knowledge is power. We at HSSS would get tested. Would you? Read More
Even with Jerimiah feeling a little under the weather, and new mama Kelly running on very little sleep, this week’s They Said was a chat-filled roundtable of all things hot in the news now. The crew dished about the ongoing Weinergate controversy, the Casey Anthony trial, San Diego Mayor’s race, the Real Housewives of Orange County reunion show, the Amazing High Heel Race, the current state of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell + more. Then, the producers wanted to know what the crew thought about sexting others if you’re in a relationship: is it cheating or is it harmless? Some of their opinions might surprise you. Finally, the fabulous Ian wrapped up with some great upcoming events in and around the gayborhood. Read More
In North Park, that place where “everybody knows your name” is Redwing Bar & Grill, the host location this month for “HSSS LIVE From.” With a PBR tall boy at the ready for Aaron, and a berry concoction for Ophelia, we recapped a weekend filled with San Francisco drag the way only Ophelia can do. Then, we moved on to news items like Weinergate, plastic surgery, the IGRA’s “It Gets Better” video, lgbt ally Gwyneth Paltrow & AIDS Lifecycle. We talked in depth about San Diego’s LGBT media & activists while sharing an excerpt from Nicole Murray-Ramirez’s latest column in the LGBT Weekly talking about responsibility, owning one’s words, change and growth and then delved into our own personal ‘do overs if we could.’ After the extended chat fest, which had Producer Bo in perpetual ‘wrap-up’ mode, we finally wrapped things up with big local events including the San Diego American Flag Football championship games this weekend, Church at Babycakes, Wii Olympics and the Red Flash Mob in Balboa Park to commemorate 30 years since the discovery of HIV/AIDS.
