This week, Ophelia & Aaron chatted with one of the most recognized white faces in San Diego, Iona Dubble-Wyde, formerly of the San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Having recently been excommunicated from the local order, Iona, whose drag persona has evolved into Ms Lona Excommunicado, talked about her years with the Sisters and passion for the organization’s mission, what she feels happened, and how Iona (and Lona) are moving forward in a positive direction for the benefit of the community. Lona is one of the organizers involved in San Diego Remembers, a candlelight vigil and empowerment rally taking place on Tuesday, October 11, to mark the anniversary of Matthew Shepard‘s death. The mission of San Diego Remembers is to raise awareness of hate crimes in the community & to remember those who are or were victims of acts of hate and/or violence because of their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. Ophelia channeled her namesake storm, whirling her way through the gayborhood all weekend, so she had a lot to recap with Aaron. After we got settled in to our studio set at Urban Mo’s, where the only thing more fab than the drinks are the people who serve them, Ophelia shared her jam packed weekend of drunken debauchery before Aaron moved on to news & hot topics including the Facebook changes making everyone crazy, the prostitute busted for orally servicing an undercover deputy using a fake penis, the BIG end of DADT and the Marine Recruiters taking advantage of a new marketing by recruiting at LGBT Community Centers. Of course, TV was a topic (everyone should watch Two Broke Girls) but this weeks big focus was “toxic friends” – the six types of toxic people to avoid…and speculating which type our friends think we are. If you’ve listened to rock ‘n roll radio in San Diego in the last 10 years, then you know this woman merely by her sultry-rough voice: the leading lady of 91X, Robin Roth. Robin joined us at our Brass Rail studio to have a beer & a chat about both her club and radio DJ career, the local music & goth scene, social media and how she stalked…er, met…her husband. Robin’s a genuine, classy lady with an edge who would, hands down, come out on top in a rock ‘n roll trivia bar brawl. After the show, check out all Robin’s musing on her blog! Read More
