You know, I’ve lived in Southern California for almost 20 years and have been to my share of Pride celebrations: WeHo, Long Beach, Palm Springs and San Diego. Come Pride season, I’d hit the circuit, going from one festival to the next…to the next. It was an annual tradition my first few years living in Los Angeles. After a while though, they all started to ‘blend together.’ The same $15 t-shirts, the same food, the same parties, the same DJs and the same vendors hawkin’ the same big ole gay schwag in each city. I always enjoyed and appreciated the meaning behind Pride and the fun and frivolity of the celebration itself. It’s just that the retail aspect of the festivals had become, to me, less ‘community market’ and too ‘CostCo.’ That aside, I’d keep going back, year after year, for one thing – the entertainment.
