LIVE from Bourbon Street 6/24/10

This webcast is dedicated to our good friend Todd Chanley who passed away suddenly earlier this week. Today’s raucous little chat fest from one of gay San Diego’s institutions, Bourbon Street bar, was a riot. Ophelia and Aaron got a sneak peak of the bar’s new patio that will make its debut just in time for San Diego Pride (July 17-18.) The naughty talk started with the introduction of the ‘Chili Dog’ and moved to a lesson on A4A vs real inches in the ‘personality’ department. Topics covered included San Diego LGBT media outlets and several local events such as Arte! Vida! Tequila! celebrating Frida Kahlo‘s 102nd Birthday and Six Pack Saturday presented by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. We shared our Best of Craigslist postings and talked with special guests Aya Ting & Alexander Williams, the reigning (and first ever) Ms. & Mr. Trans San Diego. We had a little technical ‘glitch’ toward the end of the webcast. Don’t get your pantie hamster in a tizzy. The last 20 minutes were recorded. We’ll get it uploaded shortly so stay tuned!

After a while though, they all started to ‘blend together.’ The same $15 t-shirts, the same food, the same parties, the same DJs and the same vendors hawkin’ the same big ole gay schwag in each city. I always enjoyed and appreciated the meaning behind Pride and the fun and frivolity of the celebration itself. It’s just that the retail aspect of the festivals had become, to me, less ‘community market’ and too ‘CostCo.’ That aside, I’d keep going back, year after year, for one thing – the entertainment. And, I’ve seen some great Pride performances: Jennifer Hudson, Leona Lewis, Chaka Kahn, Cyndi Lauper and CeeCee Peniston to name just a few. Read More
