With Ian out working hard for AIDS Walk and Jerimiah sick at home on the sofa, Aaron sat in with Courtney, Kelly & Alejandra for this week’s roundtable chat of news & hot topics. Big on the list was the end of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy (TODAY), which culminates in celebrations at the LGBT Center and several local bars around the gayborhood. After thanking our gay & lesbian military and veterans for their service, Courtney moved the dish fest onto other big headlines including the Denmark sperm bank that discriminates against red heads, changes at Netflix, proposed changes for the U.S. Postal Service, whooping cough vaccination, all the iPhone rumors and, of course, this weekend’s big event: AIDS Walk San Diego. Please help support HIV & AIDS services in San Diego by walking or donating to a team. Or, if you have some time, volunteer for the event…they could use some extra help. Read More
This week, Aaron, Ophelia & the HSSS crew took a break from our regular Urban Mo’s studio location to visit the brand new home of Mama’s Kitchen, one of San Diego’s most beloved social service organizations that provides healthy, nutritious meals to those living with HIV, AIDS and cancer. Their lovely new 11,000 sq ft facility on Home Avenue now gives them the ability to prepare, cook & bag food for not only current clients, but many more in need. We got a behind-the-scenes tour of their new digs, including Mama’s Pantry, and Alberto’s extra-large office, and discussed their upcoming event, Mama’s Pie in the Sky – the annual pie sale starting on October 3. Then, we buckled down to share our Blackout 2011 experiences, the big Big Brother season finale and what we’re excited for in the upcoming fall TV season. We finished off with some fun events including a big birthday party fundraiser for Stonewall Citizens Patrol, return of some Rodeo fun at Urban Mo’s, Matchgame at the Hole to benefit our AIDS Walk team + so much more. Thanks to Alberto & Denise for being such gracious hosts. If you’ve got some spare time and want something constructive to do, volunteer for Mama’s Kitchen – you’ll be glad you did. Read More
It’s not often that the entire HSSS crew & audience is smitten with a guest but that’s exactly what happened with this week’s man of the hour, San Diego’s very own news reporting hotness, Doug Kolk. Happy to sit in the hot seat, Doug chatted with Aaron & Ophelia about how he got started in TV journalism, the travels that have taken him up and down the east coast to finally landing in San Diego, where he’s solidified his news groove – and fan base – reporting for KFMB CBS channel 8. This was Doug’s first time at the Brass Rail and he really enjoyed himself. Watch and find out why we’re all a flutter over Doug and make sure you tune in to CBS in San Diego daily to catch him in action. Read More
