This week, Aaron & Ophelia sat down with San Diego’s Queen of Giving, the fabulous Ruth Henricks, founder of Special Delivery San Diego. Ruth joined us at our Brass Rail studio to talk about the meal delivery and food pantry service for those living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, MS and other critical illnesses. Celebrating 20 years next month, Special Delivery got it’s start when Ruth, owner/operator of Mission Hills favorite, The Huddle, noticed one of her regular customers, Scott, wasn’t showing up for lunch. “If I’m not here, I’m not eating,” proclaimed Scott who was sick with HIV and too weak to cook for himself. Ruth spent the next several months trying to locate Scott so that she could bring hearty, nutritious meals to him at home and in that search, Special Delivery was born. Now serving more than 150 clients a week through the meal delivery service and more at Special Delivery’s food pantry, the all-volunteer organization does more than just give life through nutrition, they give love. Watch to find out more about Ruth, her fantastic story of caring and compassion, Special Delivery and how you can get involved as a volunteer or donor. Read More
This week, Aaron & Ophelia sat down with Shannon Wagner the Executive Director of Being Alive San Diego, one of the city’s most encompassing HIV & AIDS direct service & support providers. The struggling economy has hit many non-profits very hard but Being Alive still forges ahead to provide peer advocacy, holistic care, moving assistance, support groups, educational seminars, food, grooming, ADAP/CARE/HIPP service enrollment and more to 3,000+ people infected and affected by HIV & AIDS. Approximately 80% of Being Alive clients live at or below federal guidelines for poverty. Shannon talked about Being Alive’s many caring programs and services, the growing needs of the clients they serve and how you, the community, can get involved through donating, volunteer opportunities, their new recycling program and their annual fundraising event, Soul Plates, which she surprised Aaron & Ophelia with a special request for a He Said / sHe Said-designed ‘plate.’ We’re absolutely honored.
